Tarot medium, psychic medium, online psychic, spiritual medium, live psychic, psychic readings, tarot readings, psychic readers – the internet is overflowing with different types of psychics and psychic readings. But what is the difference between them all? IS there any difference? It can be confusing when you’re looking for a good psychic reading. I’ll try to specifically address the differences between a psychic medium and a psychic.

What is a Psychic vs What is a Psychic Medium?

A psychic is someone who possesses special abilities that most others do not have. These special abilities can be called all sorts of things – clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, mediumship, psychic intuition and many others. A psychic may possess only one of these talents or all of them, much like athletic or musical talent. Some musicians can play many instruments and some only play one – howbeit really well.

What is a Psychic Medium?

A Psychic Medium is a particular type of psychic whose combination of gifts allow him or her to communicate with the world of spirits. I say “world of spirits” but people refer to it many different ways – another dimension, a parallel dimension, the hereafter, heaven or any number of other names. No matter its name, most people imagine it as a place inhabited by spirits. These spirits can’t normally communicate with people in our world but certain psychics can sense, see or even talk with them.

Difference Between a Spiritual Medium and Psychic Medium

So what’s the difference between those who call themselves a psychic medium and those who call themselves a spiritual medium? The answer is a bit complicated. Before the internet, psychics were people you visited to get your fortune told using tarot cards, palm reading or some other divination method. Mediums, who were just known as a plain old “medium,” were people you went to to speak to someone who had passed away – usually by doing what’s called a seance.

A Psychic Medium Today

With the internet, much of this changed. Many more psychics became available though online websites and many of them did both the fortune telling and communicating with spirits. About the same time, the spiritualist movement was sweeping the U.S. and Europe and people began trying to contact other spirits, such as spirit guides, angels and guardian spirits. So a medium was no longer someone who could only communicate with departed souls, but also with angels, spirit guides… and even departed pets.

So what then is the real difference? Strictly speaking, a psychic is a person with what we commonly call psychic abilities. A medium is a person who can communicate with spirits. And a psychic medium would be someone who has psychic abilities and can also communicate with spirits. Does that help clear it up?
Navigating the world of psychics can be confusing. Your best bet is to talk with the psychic, or medium, psychic medium or whatever they are calling themselves and tell them what you want and ask them if they can do that. If they are honest – and hopefully they are – they will tell you if something is outside the scope of their abilities and maybe even refer you to someone who can help, be it a psychic, psychic medium or just plain old medium.
